After seeing a report of a local teenager’s organs being used to save numerous lives, a Bloomfield Hills man decided to give one of his kidneys to save the life of a man he’s never met.
He now is using the experience to encourage others to learn more about organ donation.
Temple Shir Shalom, 3999 Walnut Lake Road, will host a National Organ Donor Shabbat at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, to encourage people to learn more about organ donation. One speaker at the event will be James Baker, a local lawyer who donated one of his kidneys about two months ago.
Baker saw a news report about 19-year-old Emily Stillman, who died in February 2013 of bacterial meningitis, and how her parents decided to donate her organs to Gift of Life Michigan.
Baker previously worked with Emily’s father, Michael Stillman, and knew Emily when she was a child. He had thought about organ donation before, and when he saw a news report about the Emily Stillman Foundation, which raises awareness about organ donation, he started to become more serious about it.
